Picture

Since the beginning of the heavy rains on the 25th of May 2017, that lashed the sourthern parts of the country resulted in rapid high volumes of rains and flash floods. Sudden landslides created havoc in many areas washing down houses and whatever in the way down the hills. The most affected were the areas of Kalutara Matara Galle and Ratnapura. As many as 630,082 people belonging to 163,889 families were affected  displacing them from their villages. The death toll rose up to 212 while hundreds of thousands were affected by the floods and the landslides which damaged most of their assets and ruined their homes.

The response for emergency needs came forth from the people and other well-wishers. Many have now returned to their homes but yet hundreds remain in the welfare centers or with other friends and relations having lost their homes.

The need of assistance to restart their lives becomes important at this point of time starting with cleaning the areas and homes to make them habitable once more.  Supporting them with basic assets, repairing and constructing homes have to be given attention to. The children and students of higher classes have lost all their educational books, notes and school attires and shoes that will now affect their education. The assessments have shown some of the pre-schools in villages are affected preventing the pre-school going children to continue. Many having lost their livelihoods, securing, food security too becomes important.
