The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the socio-economic fabric of the country has been severely aggravated by the current US$ crisis in Sri Lanka which came about in January 2022. This has led to unavailability of fuel, long-spanning power-cuts, non-availability of essentials and now a drastic increase in the general cost of living. All of these factors have had negative effects on the people of Sri Lanka which is causing severe food insecurity mainly among the low-income families.
Many organizations have approached Sevalanka Foundation to support the most vulnerable and needy. Thaagam Foundation is one such organization that contacted Sevalanka in April 2022, with the intention of supporting through the distribution of dry rations and cooked meals. Thaagam Foundation, with it’s main focus area being distribution of cooked meals to the homeless and slum-dwellers, operates in Chennai and other parts of India. Their main funding is through crowd funding, and they have taken up an interest in Sri Lanka in light of the prevailing situation.
They were in Sri Lanka from the 10th of April until the 30th of April, during which time they supported many vulnerable families with dry ration packs, as well as cooked food. The details of their assistance is listed below:
